German Chancellor in Turkey |
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, visiting Turkey close on the heels of European Union Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, pressed Turkey to meet its obligation to grant EU-member Greek Cyprus trade privileges if it wants to avoid a crisis in its accession process. “I believe it is understandable and obvious that when member states in the European Union want to cooperate with each other, free trade relations and access to ports and airports should be part of that,” Merkel said at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoðan. “We will never look positively at opening our ports and airports unless the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots is lifted,” Erdoðan said. “First of all, asking Turkey to do this is not a fair demand.” Turkey is under EU pressure to open up its ports and airports to Greek Cypriot traffic by the end of this year. Finland, which holds the EU's rotating presidency, has floated a proposal aimed at averting a crisis, but it remains unclear whether they can provide a basis for any progress. “We now have a Finnish proposal on the table, and I have heard with interest that this has been welcomed by Turkey and I hope we can solve a difficult problem,” Merkel said. “It is a problem we must address. ... It is a necessary condition for progress with the EU negotiations.” The two leaders were to have detailed talks on the Finnish proposal, which was also discussed during Rehn's visit. The Turkish side welcomed the proposal as constructive during talks with the EU commissioner but stressed that approval of the proposal by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) was important. They also discussed a possible visit by the KKTC President Mehmet Ali Talat to Brussels for further talks over the proposal, said Foreign Ministry officials.

How 2007 will be for Alanya? |
Fortune teller and medium Mücella Uyanlik lives in Alanya since several years and had a look for us to the future.
For looking to the future Mücella puts the Taro cards upon the table in front of her and chooses 10 out of them. At the first already she does not see any hope for a better tourism in Alanya in 2007. “But first of all the main reason is, everybody just sits around, complaining and waiting things coming from somewhere instead of looking forward and creating some new ideas”, she says. “Real Estate sector will have a revitalisation but entire situation of Alanya will change in 2008 when Alanya became an amusement center…The election will hardly not come for Hasan Sipahio?lu as Alanya’s mayor again as well as he not will be a deputy in parliament. But new Mayor will be as strong as he is…” Mücella Uyanlik recognised her ability to look in the future, when she was 11. She works now officially as a fortune teller and pays even taxes for this profession.

20 hotels for sale |
Because of bad summer season past year and less hope for betterment within this year several hotel owners decided to sell their hotels. According to the association for Tourism (ALTID) foreigners show interest for the hotels on sale which are mostly 4-star-hotels with a capacity of beds between 200-300. Furthermore, in those areas where developement plan was enlarged, apart-hotels became knocked down for constructing flats. Likewise a trend is watched which turns back to “Boutique-Hotels” which means to individuell hotel rooms. Even the therapeutic words of minister of culture- and tourism, Atilla Koç, in 2007 Turkey will be frequented by tourists more than last year, seem to be unimpressive in the face of real situation. |

Carelessness with fatal consequences |
Missunderstanding of holiday- and freedom-feelings make also tourists make forget some of the rules in road traffic as here at one of the numberless Jeep-Safaris, where all thoughts of security for even the own life are switched off. Publisher of daily „Yeni Alanya“ took the photograph of the Jeep with its two „free riders“, because for him a trip with such an overstaffed vehicel was dangerous and he thought mentioning it in his newspaper. Unfortunately, short time later we received the news by police wireless, that this jeep made an accident where driver lost his life and several vehicle occupants got injured. In fact, operator of the tours will be called for account but participants of those tours should not do it without recognizing certain security-standards and should not accept such an overstaffed vehicle in no case. |

Many misunderstandings.. |
The commentators spoke of "Veiling obligation at the Beach" or of it that the religious-conservative government party wants to forbid bathing clothes to the holiday-makers in Alanya. The local AKP politican Hilmi Ar?kan had however only suggested to request the tourists dressing appropriate outside by beach and Swimmingpool - women such as men. Now, the local AK-Pary is attacked to harm the tourism. Said tourists asked by reporters of the German television channel ARD they find it completely normally that one does not walk in the Bikini or trunk on the road. |

Mourning and Anger |
The mourning about the dead soldiers, killed in the offensive of the terrorist PKK is as big as the anger. In Alanya, in entire Turkey people went on the streets demonstrating against the violence and the terror at the border to Iraq.
The offensive of PKK at Turkish border soldiers do not leave anybody unconcerned in entire Turkey. The old and the young, right and left – all show jointly how they condemn the violence of the terroristic group. Voices of calls for invasion of Turkish army among the demonstrating people arise and browbeat the government. Even students write upon their banners that they want to become soldiers for fighting against the terrorists as several of demonstrating people use the opportunity to vent their’s anger. A young man overflew a car with petrol and set them in fire. With all mourning and entitled anger, it is necessary to act thoughtful and not to continue heating up the temper. |
