Primeminister uncomfortable with free press |
There came a "war" up between the Turkish media magnate Ayd?n Dogan and Prime Minister Erdogan. The case began with a German corruption iquiry into a religious charity. The premier blamed reporting on the case on ulterior motives of Turkey's dominant media group. Dogan has asserted that the reverse is the case: that the premier is contirving motivations in an effort to muzzle the press from reporting on the German case and ohter corruption controversies stalking Erdogan's AKP. New developments in the case, which began with German prosecutors alleging funds were illegally transferred to Turkey included a confession by the directors of the charity organization, Lighthouse e.V. in Germany, that they transferred most of the donations, amounting 41.6 million USD to Turkey for use in private companies. Mehmer Ergün, one of the directors, confessed he got a certain amount of money to deliver it to Erdogan, to transfer to Tsunami victims in Eas Asia. Erdogan dismissed documents which show his name in the incictment of the German prosecutor as an attempt to blackmail him in prusuit to commercial benefits. |
